Wellbeing Week - May 2023

Our Wellbeing Week this year will be led by adults in school. The children will be vertically grouped (mixing children across all year groups) so that peer nurturing and teaching can be developed. The activities planned will support the needs and interests of all ages and will take place both inside and outside the classroom. All planning will be based around the SCARF units of 'Me and My Relationships', 'Keeping Myself Safe' and 'Rules, Rights and Responsibilities' and will link to Global Goals and the UNICEF Rights of the Child.

PSHE Curriculum Statement

At St Andrew’s CE Primary School, personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.

PSHE links to The International Rights of the Child

At St Andrew’s CE Primary School, we firmly follow the guidance of the UNICEF Rights of the Child. Specifically, Article 24 states that all children should have “the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help us to stay well”.

INTENT

The curriculum will meet the statutory Guidance 2019, Relationships Education (RE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (HE), whereby schools must provide a “balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.”

We will provide opportunities to make positive relationships in a safe and caring environment. We encourage reflection on actions and promote restorative justice techniques within relationships-learning, allowing each child to develop empathy, tolerance and a sense of respect and responsibility. We equip children with strategies and skills to negotiate with others. We encourage awareness of self-regulation, which improves mental well-being.

IMPLEMENTATION

St Andrew’s CE Primary School use a “live” Primary PSHE scheme of work called Coram Life Education (Also known as SCARF, which stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship). This is an online resource, centred on a Values-based and Growth-mindset approach. It is regularly updated, to reflect the changing needs of society. It can be tailored to specific needs arising in school and covers a wide variety of topics, such as:

  • Risk Taking /Safety/Dares
  • Diversity
  • Emotional Health
  • Coping Strategies
  • Healthy Eating
  • Healthy relationships/bullying
  • Puberty/Growing up
  • Financial Education
  • British Values
  • Physical Activity
  • E-Safety
  • Substance Misuse
  • Adoption
  • Secrets
  • Safeguarding
  • Prejudice
  • Hygiene
  • Being Yourself

The scheme is known as a “spiral” curriculum, where certain topics might be covered more than once across the time spent in our school, but they are approached each time in greater depth, building on previous “learning blocks”, reinforcing understanding and developing it further.#

IMPACT

  • Children will stay safe, including online
  • Children and adults form positive relationships.
  • Children use a range of strategies to solve social challenges.
  • Children develop resilience and a positive mind-set.
  • Behaviour is improved by explaining feelings and needs

We welcome different members of the community to share their experiences and expertise with the children. This might be volunteers who share stories from a by-gone time (such as the visit of the soldiers and Warhorses), when pupils are encouraged to reflect on decisions and actions as well as have empathy for outcomes of war; visitors also share information about places visited, where others are less well-off economically and our children are inspired to improve the lives of others through their own actions; our children take time to make food for others in our local community, or to sing to the elderly; risk-taking is encouraged, with a scaffolded approach to considering the harm to themselves and others through actions and takes place in controlled environments such as in Outdoor learning areas and within Forest School environments with trained supervisors. In school, we pride ourselves on being proactive and in seeing children as individuals, with different needs and learning styles. We aim to promote self-help and independence through displays and by example.

Wellbeing:

Well-being in school is addressed through many different approaches, from restorative justice, to having a visiting Therapy Dog and by encouraging peer support by the use of a range of pupil ambassadors. We have also invested in training for play therapy, a welfare officer and art therapy and have experienced staff to deliver emotional literacy support (ELSA).
